Stevia
What is Stevia*?
Since late 2011, Stevia* is allowed to be used in Germany. Stevia* is a sweetener extracted from the plant of the same name, which is native to South America. The Swiss botanist Moises Giacomo Bertoni discovered it in 1887 in South America, where it has been cultivated in plantations since the late 1970s. Stevia* leaves taste up to 300 times sweeter than table sugar, however it does not contain any energy value. The leaves and extracts of the plant can be used as a calorie-free sweetener in foods and beverages, therefore the artificial sweeteners aspartame and acesulfame K no longer need to be used.
