Natural Flavourings & Colourings
Pulmoll places the highest priority on carefully chosen ingredients and the quality of its products. It therefore goes without saying that our Pulmoll pastilles are produced almost exclusively with flavourings derived from nature and colourings.
Interesting facts about flavouring production
Flavouring production can be traced back to the 4th century. The first flavourings and preservatives were smoke, herbs and spices. The first essential oils were then distilled as perfume and fragrances.
The word ‘flavour’ originates from the Greek and is associated with three meanings: First of all the pleasant smell of food. Second, in the aromatherapy ethereal oils are referred to as flavour. Third ‘the flavour’ is known as the taste-imparting element for food.
Natural flavours are found in the raw materials of vegetables or animals. When it comes to fruits, the flavours are for example created in the normal metabolism of the plant.
The flavours only need to be isolated in order to obtain them.
To do this, for example the extraction process is used. With this method, specific substances are removed from the natural raw material mixture so that only the desired substance (flavourings) remains.
Natural flavourings can also be obtained through distillation. The required flavourings need to be evaporated from the liquid mixture (fruit component and solvent) and condensed afterwards (reflowed by cooling). Here the objective is also to separate the liquid from the solids contained within.
Interesting facts about colourings
The colourings for our pastilles are made with only dyes from plant extracts.
In order to produce plant extracts, the required parts of the plant are dissolved in a solvent (water, oil, alcohol or organic solvents). By extracting the resulting plant solution, the components of the plant needed for the extract are isolated and purified through a filtration system. The filtered extract is then heated to produce the concentrated finished product.
By using flavours and colours derived from nature, our Pulmoll pastilles are a perfect taste experience.
